Singapore enjoys being one of the greenest cities in Asia, and with the addition of the newly proposed ecological park, it will swell further with pride! This park will not just be any park but a huge recreational space sprawling an area of 24-kilometers, across the north and south length of the city.

The proposed park site is the city-state’s old Rail Corridor that retired about four years back and now this abandoned former rail route is all set to get a new lease of life. This line was closed when the terminus was shifted to TanjongPagar, in the north of Singapore.

The design and final plan for the park is yet to be finalized and the Urban Redevelopment Authority in Singapore has held numerous competitions and exhibitions to get innovative design ideas for the park.

Nikken Sekkei, a Japanese architecture firm has been appointed to work on the project and the company’s spokesperson told CNN that the proposed new recreational park will be one-of-its-kind that celebrates the huge geographical span, the diverse culture and people of Singapore.

The park will be regenerated in a style similar to the successful High Line in New York, with the only difference that this one will be ten times longer.

As per Shoji Kaneko, a spokesperson from Nikken Sekkei, the park design will boast 8 themed stretches and there will be about 10 activity nodes focusing different areas of sports, activity, entertainment, and so on.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROPOSED RECREATIONAL PARK

    • There will be one section called the Green Connector, which will house verdant forest walkways for those who love proximity to nature and there will also be an observation desk.
    • The Community Cave will be one of the 10 activity nodes and it will feature yoga decks for people wanting to enjoy yoga sessions amidst serenity, and it might also have a rock climbing wall.
    • Queenstown Viaduct will be called the Passage of Light, and this section will have interactive and beautiful floor lighting that will react to the speed of pedestrians and cyclists.
    • The Station Park will celebrate the old and restored railway station and it will also exhibit the various artifacts to keep the railways heritage alive.
    • The recreations space will also have a firefly garden that will be a real treat for the eyes of visitors.
    • The Northern Nexus will be the last node situated in the northernmost area of the rail park and this will be a sports and recreational center where people can enjoy water sports like kayaking, boating, swimming, and so on.
    • The park will offer something for everyone, joggers, walkers, yoga enthusiasts, cyclists and so on. The connecting paths between the various nodes will be well lighted, and feature various facilities like resting points and toilets.

The park will be designed in a way to have about 122 access points, which means the thriving entertainment and activity area will just be a 5 minutes’ walk from the main commercial or residential areas. The designers hope that the park will boost the status of Singapore as one of the fittest countries in the region. It will also promote urban growth and become the lifeline of the city-sate, symbolizing the active and healthy lifestyle.
